Finding the balance between the old and the new…

When our clients, Shama and Aditya approached us for the design of the interiors of their Villa at Prestige Lakeside Habitat, Bangalore, the overall brief was to design a comfortable and functional home that would not only accommodate their current lifestyle but also one that exudes a sense of lux elegance. This was to be their home in Bangalore, where they could welcome both close friends and family with warmth and comfort. While the couple gave us the freedom to design the space, it was a very conscious effort on our part to try and blend in parts of their experiences and personality into every space. This in turn manifested in our choices of materials and colors, resulting in a striking mix of genres to create spaces that are lively and interesting. Since the spaces on the ground floor were the core of the house, where the family saw themselves spending the most time, this was where we made extensive changes in order to dramatically open them up making it feel larger than what it originally did. Another one of the important requirements put forth by them was to retain and reuse some of their older classical pieces of furniture and art pieces that they attached great sentiment to. This was a major aspect in the final design, further influenced by the strong visual language brought in by the villa’s existing English cottage architectural style with its arched windows, pitched roof, and exposed brick. While a more modern contemporary design is our natural style, as someone rightly said - design thrives on restrictions. With this project, we aimed to achieve a balance of the old and the new, where every space holds together not just contemporary elements but also pieces of nostalgia to provide them a sense of belonging while starting anew.
